Plaque removal and prevention is an important component of good dental care. Visits to the dentist can help deal with plaque and with buildup, but it's essential to pay attention to the accumulation of tartar and your general tooth health in between dental visits, too.
The American Dental Association defines plaque as the residue that accumulates on tooth enamel and threatens general tooth health. Not dealing with plaque buildup promptly can lead to further dental problems, such as gingivitis.
There are some things that can become a regular part of your dental health routine in order to curb plaque buildup and promote good dental care. Brushing and flossing on a regular basis is essential in order to prevent plaque from accumulating and to brush away any plaque that has already formed. Be sure to brush and floss thoroughly. How many minutes did you spend brushing your teeth before you left the house this morning? Many people don't spend the full two to four minutes that is recommended by dentists. Taking your time when brushing and flossing can help prevent and treat plaque before it becomes a bigger problem.
Including mouthwash as a part of your regular dental care routine can also help in the removal and prevention of plaque. Use an anti-plaque mouthwash that can help kill germs and prevent tartar buildup in your mouth.
Regular visits to the dentist are also an important component of a dental health routine. Even if you brush and floss your teeth regularly, tartar can still form, especially on the back teeth or areas where you may not brush as carefully. Be sure to visit your dentist and hygienist at least twice a year, and more often than that if you suspect a problem or experience pain.
Prevention of plaque and tartar buildup is an essential component of a successful dental care routine. Preventing and treating plaque can help prevent future dental problems, as well as make for a beautiful smile today.
