The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) from Millennium Dental Technologies has been proven an effective treatment of moderate to severe gum disease, including gingivitis and periondontitis in a peer-reviewed study.
The PerioLase MVP-7 variable pulsed Nd:YAG dental laser was shown to be FDA-approved and showed a 100 percent success rate after three months in achieving new connective tissue attachment (CTA) and regeneration of root surface, or cementum, in the subjects studied.
Raymond A. Yukna, lead researcher and director of advanced periodontal therapies at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine, said: "Recent years have seen major advancements in periodontal technology, and this study is a successful demonstration of using a free running pulsed Nd: YAG laser applying the specific LANAP protocol."
According to the American Dental Association (ADA), about three out of four adult Americans have some form of gum disease and about 25 million suffer from serious forms of the disease.
Millennium Dental Technologies estimated that the LANAP-licensed practitioners are now treating more than 14,000 patients around the country each year and that the technology is now a legitimate treatment alternative to conventional scalpel/suture flap surgery.
The study was published in The International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry.
