A dental bridge is used to close the gaps formed by teeth that are missing. Dental gaps lead to teeth shifting because of the vacant spaces in between. This might also result in gum diseases or TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) disorders, if not treated properly.
Various substances including metal alloys, porcelain, gold and other materials are used to make a dental bridge. A dental bridge is designed to consist of a pontic (also referred to as a crown) that is placed between natural teeth. After dental crowns are fitted, they are kept in place with support from natural teeth that are next to them.
In addition to preventing problems caused by missing teeth, a dental bridge helps restore the appearance of the mouth. Furthermore, they can help you obtain a better overall facial appearance, display a better smile or maintain proper shape of the mouth. A person may also lose the ability to chew his food properly due to tooth loss. Since dental bridges are used to replace missing teeth, they allow for equal distribution of force when you bite.
In order for a dental bridge to sit or fit properly in the mouth, it is necessary to shape the surrounding teeth as needed. Extreme care and precaution ensures that the size and shape of a dental bridge meets the exact specification of the original teeth. After the preparation of surrounding teeth, the dentist will take an impression of the area. This is done to provide an identical mold or model for how the crown or bridge is to be created. Different kinds of dental bridges are available according to the diverse needs and requirements of each patient. These include:
- The Traditional Bridge - dental bridge consisting of two crowns placed on the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Then they are attached to the pontic replacing the gap. These types of traditional bridges are the most popular. They are usually made up of porcelain mixed with other metals and ceramics.
- The Maryland Bonded Bridge - dental bridge made from a metal framework with one pontic fused to it. When complete this dental bridge looks like a fake tooth with metal flaps or wings on each side. These metal clasps secure the pontic in proper position and support the bridge in place. This is the most cost effective dental bridge and is quite easy to use.
- Cantilever Bridge – dental bridge that attaches to adjacent teeth but only on one side (rather than on both sides of the missing tooth)
