As a registered nurse, certified personal trainer, fitness instructor, and childbirth educator, Julie Tupler has helped thousands of moms have faster, easier deliveries—and quicker, more thorough recoveries. Now, in Lose Your Mummy Tummy, she shows us how to rid ourselves of that little (or not so little) postpartum pouch—yes, the dreaded “mummy tummy.”As Tupler explains, a “mummy tummy” is actually the outward sign of something called a diastases—a normal separation in the abdominal wall that’s caused by the growing uterus. Most of the exercises we do to get rid of our “mummy tummy” actually make it worse, and even things as simple as lifting or rolling out of bed the wrong way can exacerbate the spread. This can lead to back pain and other problems…not to mention a larger pair of jeans.
Lose Your Mummy Tummy outlines the “Tupler Technique”—a set of simple exercises that decrease the diastases and flatten the stomach. The method works regardless of when you had your baby. In other words, you can “lose your mummy tummy” if you just gave birth or if you delivered decades ago. The book also includes a thirty-minute workout and information on the proper way to lift your baby so as not to strain your back, wrists, and abs.
The introduction to Lose Your Mummy Tummy is written by one of the many OB/GYNs who refers her patients to Tupler, whose client list includes a number of celebrities: Jessica Seinfeld took her class, supermodel Elle Macpherson believes in the technique so much that she actually wrote the preface to this book, and “E.R.” actress Sherry Stringfield provided a blurb.
Julie Tupler is President and founder of Maternal Fitness, a prenatal/postpartum exercise program based in Manhattan. She is on the advisory board of Fit Pregnancy magazine, which will run an excerpt from the book in their January issue. Earlier this year, the Newborn Channel (seen in hospitals nationwide) started airing a six-minute segment on how to tighten your abs via the “Tupler Technique.” It will run for the next two years.
